Coming to a street near you! – Birmingham Hippodrome’s exciting brand new creative programme takes theatre beyond the stage!

We are in the process of developing a new creative programme which will extend  our reach beyond the main stage. Sarah Allen, who has recently been appointed to lead on the creative programme,  provides a little taster for you.

For the first time this summer, Birmingham Hippodrome will be animating the city by presenting highlights from the best in outdoor theatre.

If you are on a day out with the family, meeting friends, shopping, or simply enjoying a glass of wine in an outdoor café, look out for performances in and around the city

Everything will be free to the public and will happen over six consecutive Saturdays from 24 July until 28 August –  just in time for the summer holiday period.  Scheduled shows will take place on the piazza in front of the theatre and at other locations including Arcadian Centre, High Street and Cathedral Gardens (fondly known as Pigeon Park!).

Our summer events start with a Vogue Ball, (strike a pose!) a day and evening of being seen, showing off and celebrating the performer in everyone.   We will challenge our audiences to step up and step out onto the catwalk, release their inner diva and perform to their hearts’ content.

And there’s more!   Other weeks will see raving grannies on souped up shopping trolleys, giant kangaroos bouncing around the city, classic puppetry, contemporary mime, juggling tennis players and international acrobats.

Physical theatre and circus will bring stories to the streets of Brum.   The Wheel House sees two engaging characters travel in a revolving home and you can follow two Oxbridge students who go on a relaxing punt.   The Black Box turns theatre inside-out. Watch from the wings as the performers create a unique show for an audience of one.

And finally played to a soundtrack of Ravel’s Bolero, The Spurting Man has to be seen to be believed!  A pompous performer and his downtrodden assistant struggle with a tempestuous relationship, building up to a spectacular crescendo (quite literally!).

We are looking forward to the streets of Birmingham coming to life with some wonderful shows.   For those seeing Sound of Music this summer catch some of these fantastic performances as you arrive or leave the theatre or, better still, make a special journey for them.
