Backstage with the cast of “Hairspray”!

The cast of the Hit West End and Broadway musical, Hairpsray conclude the show with “You can’t stop the beat”. The show’s leading man, or should I say Lady, Mark Benton in the role of Edna Turnblad describes it more as “You can’t stop to breathe” – which is pretty much the ideal description of the energy and colour in this production.

Yesterday (4 Apr) a group of members of the media and I set off from Birmingham and said a happy “Good Morning Milton Keynes!” as we made our way to catch the show and meet the cast before curtain up on the matinee performance.

Led through the labyrinth that is backstage by Company Manager, Mike Mansfield we finally came upon a series of dressing rooms occupied by the stars of the show; Lucy Benjamin (Velma), Mark Benton (Edna) and Marcus Collins (Seaweed).

The next 60 minutes or so was then occupied by a series of interviews and chats for upcoming podcasts, video reports and newspaper columns – keep your eye’s peeled for upcoming updates. All three principal performers were a joy to meet and, once we had taken our seats for the show, a joy to watch on stage also. You can read theatre blogger, Scott Bird’s report on the day and interviews with the cast here.

Last time Hairspray was with us every seat in the theatre was sold out, so “run and tell that” and see you for a second time round at Hairspray from 21 May – 1 June. More ticket info here.
