It’s almost time for the great and the good of British Theatre to grace the red carpet at London’s Royal Opera House for the 2013 Olivier Awards, and I for one can’t wait.
It is great to see this annual awards ceremony finally getting back the coverage it deserves, with a live broadcast on BBC Radio 2 from 6pm and a highlights show from 6pm on ITV both on Sunday night – so let’s rejoice fellow thespians and get involved!
As a regular theatre-goer it’s always pretty satisfying taking a look at the nominees and winners and thinking – “I saw that/them!”, “That deserves to win”, or on occasion, “How on Earth did that/they get their hands on a golden statue!?” – so what are your top picks? Make sure to join in the conversation on Sunday evening as I will be tweeting live from the Birmingham Hippodrome account (@brumhippodrome) on everything Olivier.
There are also some strong connections between this year’s nominees and our wonderful theatre. Top Hat, which opened with us as it’s 2nd ever venue back in 2011, is now up for 7 awards including Best New Musical and nominations for both leads who played the same roles on the Hippodrome stage, Summer Strallen and Tom Chambers as Best Actress and Best Actor in a Musical.
ILL-abilities, who guest starred in last year’s Breakin’ Convention here at the Hipp, are up for the Outstanding Achievement in Dance Award as is Lez Brotherston’s set and costume designs for Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty which was with us back in February.
Looking forward, next year’s big summer musical-hit, Wicked is also nominated for the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award.
So, make sure to crack open a bottle of bubbly and celebrate a big night of British theatre with me this Sunday and share your thoughts with us @brumhippodrome. (Tiara’s and Top Hat’s optional)
