Here’s a big thank you from everyone at Birmingham Hippodrome to the thousands of people who attended this weekend’s Illuminate.

The weekend saw Birmingham’s Southside district come alive with shining sculpture, projection, dance and family fun!

One of the highlights and main draws of the weekend was the incredible Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors Exhibition featuring over 80 glowing sculptures in Gallan Car Park at the bottom of Hurst Street.

Fire dancers and flame throwers also took to the streets to entertain families whilst a 360 degree igloo invited poeple for an immersive cinematic experience.

Thanks again to those who came along and take a look at our image gallery below for more photos from the event…

This weekend, wrap up warm, grab your family and friends and head down to the area’s surrounding Birmingham Hippodrome for a FREE weekend of amazing light sculpture, dance, projection, fire dancing, interactive activities and more…

Illuminate will take over the Southside district with unusual and unique things to see and do for all the family Fri 25 – Sun 27 Oct 2013. Here’s a tip – the first 100 visitors to Hippodrome Square or Le Truc will receive a free Illoom glowing balloon! Le Truc restaurant will also be serving plenty of toasty treats including takeaway hotdogs.

One of the highlights of the festival is set to be the incredible Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors Exhibition featuring a colourful lifesize ‘army’ of over 80 characters.  The exhibition was first created in 2008 for the Beijing Olympics inspired by the famous Terracotta Army discovered in 1974. Take a look for a video below to get a feel for the exhibit…

In the centre of the Arcadian a 360° dome will invite spectators to come inside and experience an immersive 3D experience not to be missed.

An exhilarating part of Illuminate will also be the spectacular FlameOz on Hippodrome Square as circus artisits and dancers thrill the audience with fire-based special effects…take a look at the teaser below:

In Gallan Car Park on Hurst Street choreographer Sonia Sabri and new media artist Andy McKeown will present a multi-layered performance featuring projections, movement, dance, light and shadow where the audience are invited to come explore the lighting environment and create shadows and shapes of their own at the conclusion of the show.

Other features of Illuminate include ‘Southside Faces’ by Andy McKeown with colourised portraits popping up in a gigantic wall of colour on the side of the Loft Lounge. Interactive projections and moving kaleidoscopic illuminations will also be roaming the streets of Southside accompanied by Mr Wilson’s Second Liners street band playing 90’s club classics in a way you have never heard before.
