Backstage at the ballet…

Step beyond the double doors to the right hand side of Birmingham Hippodrome’s Stage Door and you enter a world of endless corridors strewn with hanging costumes, wig stands and piles of pointe shoes.

Backstage at Birmingham Royal Ballet is a Labyrinth of rooms housing various backstage departments who come together to put a show on stage. Departments you pass include Wigs, Shoe Master, Costume, Fabric Store, Costume Store and many, many more.

When watching a show on stage it is quite easy to forget all the hours and man power that goes into creating a ballet of the scale that BRB present, but without these various departments and skilled workers the show simply could not go on.

Take a look below at a picture gallery of some of the backstage spaces and highlights to get a sense of exactly what goes on behind the scenes and the extra detail that goes into every single costume…

BRB’s Coppelia plays until 8 June and Giselle runs 19 – 22 June, for tickets & info click here.

  1. I believe that’s one of the charming things of ballet – lots of effort, but in the end you create an illusion that does not include many hours of work, failures and sweat.
Backstages are great places to wander around. It is so nice to see what happens there :).
